Alice Columbia Jones was born June 24th, 1838 in King George County. Her parents were Stanfield Jones (1805-1875) and Frances Byron Douglas (1808-1862).

She married John Lorenza Jett (1832-1901) on February 2nd, 1858. They had twelve children.

The 1860 census shows the family in King George near the Edge Hill post office. John is a farmer but does not appear to own land. He may have been a sharecropper. His personal property is valued at $225. The couple has two children already. Additionally they have living them a 15 year old girl named Ann Dodd listed as a domestic servant.

John severed in the Confederate Cavalry during the Civil War. He enlisted as a teamster on February 21st, 1862 and was assigned to Company I of the 9th VA Cavalry. Being a teamster meant that he was probably driving supply wagons. He survived the war.

On the 1870 census places the family in Chotank township, still in King George and still near the Edge Hill post office. John again appears to be a sharecropper with no real estate owned. His personal property is valued at $300. Seven children are listed including a two month old yet to be named.

In 1880 Alice and family show up in the Shiloh magisterial district of King George. John is still listed as a farmer and he and Alice have 10 children living at home.

The family moved to Northumberland County about 1885.

The minutes of Morattico Baptist Church from September 1897 show that Alice and John joined the church by letter, transferring their membership from Hanover Church. The 1900 census shows Alice and John ages 62 and 68 living in Wicomico township of Northumberland County with their daughter Myrtle and her husband. According the census they have been married for 42 years and Alice gave birth to 13 children with 11 still living. No occupation was given for John, Alice works as a dressmaker.

John passed away on March 13th, 1901 in Irvington, Lancaster, VA. He was buried at Irvington Baptist Church. Alice filed for a Confederate Veteran Widow's Pension in the summer of 1902.

The 1910 census shows Alice still living with her daughter, Myrtle's, family. They have moved the White Stone in Lancaster County. At age 73 she is no longer working. She is listed as a widow having 12 children with 10 still living.

Alice died September 27th, 1919. She was buried beside her husband in Irvington Baptist Church cemetery.
