Margaret Headley was born on May 11, 1789 in St. Stephens Parish, Northumberland County to William Headley and Jane Douglas. Her birth was recorded in the Parish register. She married Moses Hale on October 13th, 1813 in Northumberland County soon after the death of her father. They went on to have six children.

The family was listed in the 1830 census in Northumberland. Household members were; one male under 5, one male 15-19, one male 40-49, one female under 5, one female 5-9, one female 10-14, one female 30-39 and one male slave 24-35.

Moses wrote his will on December 29th, 1836 and refers to himself as sick and weak. The will was proven in Northumberland Court the following April. In the will he left his whole estate real and personal to Margaret during her life or widowhood. Next he left land to their sons and furniture to each of their four daughters. He also directed that after the death or marriage of his wife Margaret that all the rest of his estate including his slave named John should be sold and the proceeds divided among the children. Margaret appears to have not remarried.

On the 1850 census her son Samuel was recorded as the head of the family and listed as a farmer in Northumberland. Margaret was recorded as being 50 years old.

The 1860 census that shows her living in Northumberland nearest the post office at Union Village with the family of her son Samuel. She was marked as being born in Northumberland and being unable to read or write. No further records for Margaret have been found.
