John died late in 1706 and his will was proven in Essex County court on January 10th, 1707. After portioning land to his sons John instructed that the rest of his estate should be divided between his wife and the three young children Sarah, William and Francis. He named his Amy and son Richard as the executors of his will.
Amy remarried to Joseph Baker about 1715. They appear to have had no children. Joseph died in 1720. In his will he left much to several of his sisters living in England. He also mentions the Gatewood children:
Unto Wm. Gatewood two cows and calves; my intent and meaning is Wm the son of John Gatewood deceased..
Unto Henry Gatewood one new suit of drugt cloaths.
Unto James Gatewood my son in law, all the land and plantation I bought of Thomas Wheeler, yet so as he shall not debarr his mother from useing any part of the said land during her natural life.
Unto all the rest of my wife's children not before mentioned, to each a gold ring of the value and cost of twenty shillings.
Unto my beloved wife all the rest of my estate.
Unto my Godson Joseph Gatewood my Negro man called,Tom. to be delivered unto his guardian or trustees until he comes of age. Also my Negro girl Sue after my wife's decease.
Amy wrote her will in April of 1744 and it was proven in Essex County court in June of 1745. Amy signed her will by making a mark in the shape of an A. Amy gave much of her slaves and property to her grandchildren by her son James. She gave her clothing to her daughters; Frances, Amy and Sarah. Amy instructed that the remainder of her estate be divided among her seven children - John, Thomas, Henry, James, Frances, Amy and Sarah. She named her sons Thomas and James to be the executors of her estate.
