John Gatewood

John arrived in the colony before 1664. He may have been a head right of either Colonel John Catlett or Thomas Button. On January 13th, 1664 John witnessed a deed of gift from Thomas Button to Charles Goodrich. At that time John was listed as a resident of Farnham Parish in Old Rappahannock County.

John married Amy McGraw around 1680 and they had ten children. A 1687 land patent to James Taylor describes his land as "744 acres on the south side of Rappahannock River, beginning &c by the Indian Path als. Mr. Abreys Path. To Richard Gregorys line in sight of John Gatewoods plantation."

John made his will on November 14th, 1706 and it was proven in Essex County court on January 10th, 1707. He left to Thomas "150 acres, part of land that I formerly bought of Capt. Richard. Haile, now deceased, being also part of 5000 acres Which did formerly belong unto Col. Thomas Goodrich, Mr. Henry Aubrey and. Maj George Morriceall, deceased." He also left 100 acres to John, "the plantation I now live on" to Richard, and 75 acres to Henry. He left his daughter Anne 4,000 pounds of tobacco. John instructed that the rest of his estate should be divided between his wife and the three young children Sarah, William and Francis. He named his wife and son Richard as the executors of his will. John appears to have been able to write at least well enough to sign his own will.
