According to legend Antipoison Creek got it's name after Captain John Smith was stung on the wrist by a stingray at Stingray Point and brought to the creek by Natives who washed his wound and saved his life. It has been pointed out that Smith wrote about the incident at Stingray Point in "A True Relation of Virginia," but he did not write about going to Antipoison Creek or any other body of water to find a cure. A less compelling explanation for the name Antipoison is that it was originally an Indian word that changed over the years. Early written references to the creek spell the name several ways but all beginning with the letter "N." "Nantepoizen," "Nanbypoyson," "Nantepoyson" and "Nantepoison" some of the early variations on the name. "Anty Poison" was used on a map in 1827. The oldest known written record uses "Nantepoyson" on a 1662 land grant to John Ashley for 240 acres. In 1736 a survey of the coastal boundary of the Lancaster County was made and the creek was spelled "Nantepoyson" there as well.
Antipoison may have been known as Haddawais early on. Some believe that Haddawais orginally referred to what is today called Dymer's Creek, also located on Fleet's Bay. By either name Hugh Brent, Sr. was one of the first white settlers to live there. He owned land that was described as butting north on Haddawais Creeke (Haddaways, Hadawayes & other spellings) and Muscatoe Point (Mosquito Point) being to the south (a strong indication to me that Haddawais and Antipoison are the same creek). He also received land in 1662 on the north side of the creek, "including three Indian Cabbins formally granted to Henry Fleete." Another grant to Brent in 1664 also mentions "Haddawais Creeke." The Haddawais name is a attributed to Rowland Haddaway, who in 1659 testified at Lancaster County Court that "nine years before, he together with Tomas Gaskin, Richard Budd, Abraham Moone and John Dennys had viewed certain lands at Fleet Bay to some of which they took title and this land adjoined a creek which they named 'Haddaway's Creek.'" Rowland Haddaway is possibly connect to William Hathaway who founded the Enon Hall Plantation on Antiposion Creek.
