Elizabeth Y. Bell

Little is known about Elizabeth Y. Bell. She may have been born about 1796 in Northumberland County. Her father was John Bell and her mother may have been Elizabeth Toff. Her grandfather was Thomas Bell, a sergeant during the Revolutionary War.

Elizabeth married Thomas Bush. A marriage license bond was issued on February 18th, 1817. Richard Cockarill provided the security and her father gave written permission, indicating she was under 21. Thomas and Elizabeth had four children before her death, including a daughter also named Elizabeth Y.

In 1820 Elizabeth and Thomas were named in her father's will. They received a slave named Sarah, and her father's gun. Because it appears she received less than her siblings I wonder if she was a child from her father's first marriage and she had already been named in a will of her mother's parents.

Elizabeth died before May 19th, 1834. An entry from that date in the Lancaster County Order book recorded all the living heirs of Sgt. Thomas Bell. Elizabeth was not listed, but her four children were. Also listed as an heir was Thomsey R. Thomas. In October of that same year Thomas Bush remarried to Thomsey. Thomsey was a widowed sister of Elizabeth Y. There is a marriage record in Northumberland County on December 22nd, 1813 for George Thomas and Tomsey Bell of Wicomico Parish, security by Thomas F. Lunsford.
