Hugh Harris >> Phillip Harris >> Anne Harris >> Caster Tune >> Elizabeth Tune >> Maria Gordon >> Eliza Jane Cralle >> Laura Sisson >> Louise Bryant >> Ralph Dameron >> Mark DameronHugh Harris immigrated to Virginia and received a land patent in Northumberland County in 1668.
In the fall of 1677 Hugh purchased 400 acres of land from Samuel Griffin in what is now Richmond County. In the deed Hugh was referred to as a planter. The land was described as "Foure hundred acres of land pte of a greater tract or devident of land to me granted being upon a great swamp riseing into Totasky Creek in ye aforesd. County as by Pattent bearing date ye 6th: of August 1662 may more at large appeare ye sd Foure hundred acres being at ye westward or lower end of ye sd devident & adjoyning upon a great branch commonly known by ye name of Hogg Towne Branch on ye northwest side thereof." Soon after buying Hugh sold 150 acres of that land to Richard Bradley. On the deed Hugh's wife was listed as being Ann.
On the 1679 Northumberland County tax list Hugh was listed as living in the Mattapony area and being responsible for two tithables.
In 1684 Hugh again purchased land from Samuel Griffin in the same vicinity. Hugh was named as a planter and a resident of the branches of Totuskey. He purchased 100 acres of forest land and the bounds were described as being on one side along his newly cleared plantation lands. In 1687 Hugh sold the same 100 acre parcel to Richard Winter for 4,400 pounds of tobacco.
Hugh's wife Ann died at some point between 1696 and 1710. Hugh married on January 1st, 1711 in North Farnham, Richmond County to Patience Miller, but he did not live with his new wife for long. Hugh wrote his will on November 7th, 1712. He left all the land he had purchased from Samuel Griffin to be divided between his sons John and Hugh except what he had already deeded to his son Phillip. Additionally he left to Phillip his "great table" and cupboard. Hugh was unable to sign his name and made a mark shaped like a "H."
Hugh's will was proven on May 6th, 1713 in Richmond County Court. In June an inventory was made of his estate, it included several head of cattle and horses. In September the remains of the estate were divided among his heirs.
