During the Civil War Joseph enlisted in the 37th VA Militia on July 24th, 1861. He joined the 9th VA Cavalry, Company K on April 3rd, 1862, enlisting with Capt. Jefferies at Farnham Church for a term of three years. Joseph was present until November and December of 1862 when he was marked as sick, the following muster roll records that he was discharged from the unit on January 21st, 1863. Joseph's discharge record stated that he was 32 years old, born in Lancaster, VA, five-foot-eight inches tall, with a florid complexion, blue eyes and light hair. His occupation before the war was stated as farmer. The discharge stated that Joseph was "incapable of performing the duties of a soldier because of chronic erysipelas of both legs." Joseph's brother, James Yarrett Haynie, served in the same unit. James was captured and sent to Point Lookout Prison where he died in 1864.
No good records are known for Joseph after the Civil War, he may have died soon after the war from the infection in his legs. In the 1870 census a Joseph R. Haynie appears in Northumberland county, but he does not appear to be a match.
