Mathew Rodham was born in Yorkshire, England to Edmund Roddam and Margaret Grey in 1620. Edmund died without a will in 1632. Mathew was recorded in Accomack county, VA in 1634. There is speculation that he may have been sold to indentured servitude by older siblings in order to increase their shares of inheritance. Mathew was recorded in Kent Island, MD as early as 1638 when he was only 18 years old, he also appeared on a 1642 tax list for Kent Island. In 1648 Mathew married Elizabeth Lee Hewitt at Kent Island. The couple moved to Northumberland, VA before February 14th, 1648 when Mathew witnessed the sale of a cow. In 1652 Mathew signed and Oath of Allegiance to England in Northumberland county, he was appointed county tax collector that same year. In a 1653 deposition he testified that he was 33 years old. On July 20th, 1654 the Northumberland Court Order book recorded a grant of 300 acres of land the Mathew for the transport of himself, George Carmickell, Alex Makewater, Daniel Glover, Sarah Read and William Wiles. On September 19th, 1654 an additional 350 acres in Northumberland was granted to Matthew for transportation of seven more unnamed people into the colony. In 1655 Mathew was listed as a vestryman in the Chickacoan congregation, he probably served on the vestry for the remainder of his life. He was noted as attending a vestry meeting in 1671. In June 1664 Matthew secured another land grant for 393 acres. Also in 1664 Mathew gifted 750 acres of land to Richard Kenner who married his daughter Elizabeth. Mathew also served as a Justice for the county. In 1669 Mathew took at least five indentured servants to the county court to have their ages judged and their length of service set. In August of 1672 Mathew filed a claim against his indentured servant Anne Graves for having a child during her time of service. The court ordered Anne "make her sd Master satisfaction for his charge, trouble, & loss of tyme according & yt she be whipt for her said default." Mathew died in St. Stephens Parish, Northumberland, VA in 1675.
