Sallie appears on the 1850 census in Accomack Parish, Accomack, VA with her husband and already has two children. John's occupation is listed as a sailor with real estate valued at $500. Sallie is noted as not being able to read or write. Sons William J., age 2, and John E., age 4 months, are listed on this census. Also living with the family is 10 year old boy named Taylor Thoragood.
On the 1860 census they are still in Accomack Parish, Accomack County, and the Post Office is Metompkin. Sallie's name is spelled "Sally" and she is not marked as being unable to read or write this time. Children listed are; William J. 13, John E. 11, Edward P. 9, Mary E. 7, Virginia 5, Isaiah T. 3 and Arinthia 2 months. John is still working as a sailor and the value of his real estate has grown to $1,700. Also living with them is Elizabeth Lewis, aged 21.
The 1870 census shows the family in Metompkin township of Accomack County served by the Modest Town Post Office. John still works as a sailor, his real estate is valued at $1,200 and personal estate at $1,000. Sallie is again noted as not being able to read or write. Sons William John are both working as sailors too. Edward, age 18, is working as a farm laborer. The four younger children are all still in school. An eighth child has been born since the last census, Sadie, age 6. Also living with them is Middleton Revel or Revere, age 23, a sailor.
Sallie's husband died in 1878. In the 1880 census she is shown as a widow with children John, Isaiah and Arinthia all living with her sill. Both sons work as sailors. All family members are marked as being born in Virginia, Sallie's parents are listed as born in Virginia too.
In the 1900 census Sallie was living with her daughter, Sarah and son in law James Parks in Accomack. She was listed as age 75 and having had six children, five of which were still living. Additionally Sallie was marked as not being about the read or write.
Sallie Justice died in 1904. She is buried at Liberty Cemetery in Parksley, Accomack, VA. She is buried beside her husband, John P. Barnes and son Isaiah who died in 1895.
