Sarah Clark

Show Family Line Sarah Clark >> Fairfax Lewis >> Orah Lewis >> Marvin George >> Maida George
Sarah Clark was born about 1833 in Richmond County. She was the daughter of William Clarke and Elizabeth "Betty" Brann. Several un-sourced online family trees list her parents and Meshack Clark and Elizabeth, but a review of the 1850 census records do not list her as a daughter of that family and instead make William Clarke the only possibility. On that census Sarah is listed as age 16. Her parents are both listed as 47 and unable to read or write. William was a farmer with real estate valued at $125. Her grandfather, Reuben Brann also appears to be living with the family.

William Clarke appears to have died before 1860 and Sarah married to Middleton Lewis. The record of their marriage has not been located. Sarah and Middleton are listed together on the 1860 census, but the ages make no sense. She is marked as 18 and he as 25. They lived in Richmond County above Warsaw and near the Stony Hill post office. Living with them was Sarah's mother, Betty Clark, age 50 (again the age is wrong). Sarah's name is given as Sally. Middleton's occupation is farm laborer. He does not have any real estate recorded and his personal estate is valued at $50.

The couple had a daughter about 1861 and a son in 1863. Middleton served the CSA during the war just before Fairfax's birth. He enlisted in the 40th VA Infantry Co. E in June of 1861 and was discharged in March of 1862. The 40th VA was not involved in any major battles during that time, it would go on in the summer of 1862 to fight at the Seven Days' Battles, Cedar Mountain and Antietam.

In 1870 the family is in Westmoreland nearest the Nominy Grove post office. Middleton is listed as a laborer. He has no real estate or personal property recorded. Sarah and he are both marked as being unable to read or write. That year Sarah was marked as being 25 and Middleton as 31.

I have been unable to find Sarah in the 1880 census. Her death is listed on the 1893 Death Register in Richmond County. Her death was reported on December 5th, by "Fax Lewis" her son. Her age was given as 60 and the cause of death is poorly written but possibly dropsy. Her parents names were listed as "not known." Fairfax also reported the death of an unnamed 6 month old son that same year who died August 19th of dysentery.
