Middleton C. Lewis
Middleton Lewis >> Fairfax Lewis >> Orah Lewis >> Marvin George >> Maida GeorgeMiddleton was farm laborer in Richmond County. He was unable to read or write. He served the CSA in the 40th VA Infantry.
The family shows up on the 1850 census in the Farnham Parish area of Richmond County. Alfred Lewis' profession is as a wheelwright and his real estate is valued at $800. Alfred is marked as born in Northumberland and his wife Lucinda along with Middleton in Richmond. The daughters; Lavalia, 11, and Alcinda, 4, were born in Northumberland while Almedia, 3, is marked as Richmond. Middleton's mother is marked as not being able to read or write. Also living with the family is a 22 year old man named Herna Hale who works as a farmer.
In 1860 Middleton was 25 and no longer with his parents. He is listed as the head of a family further north in Richmond County above Warsaw and near the Stony Hill post office. Living with him are Sally Lewis, age 18 and Betty Clark, age 50. This would have been Sarah Clark and her mother Elizabeth. Sarah and Elizabeth's ages appear to have been reported incorrectly. Middleton's occupation is farm laborer. He does not have any real estate recorded and his personal estate is valued at $50.
The couple had a daughter about 1861 and a son in 1863. Middleton served the CSA during the Civil War just before Fairfax's birth. He enlisted in the 40th VA Infantry Co. E in June of 1861 and was discharged in March of 1862. The 40th VA was not involved in any major battles during that time.
In 1870 the family is in Westmoreland nearest the Nominy Grove post office. Middleton is listed as a laborer. He has no real estate or personal property recorded. He and Sarah are marked as being unable to read or write. Middleton's age was given as 31 and Sarah as 25, again those ages were reported incorrectly.
Middleton probably died before 1880, he and Sarah do not appear on the census that year. Sarah's death was reported in 1893.
