Sarah "Sally" Wilder

Sarah Wilder was married to William George on November 24th, 1796 in Lancaster County by Rev. Daniel McNorton. Their bond had been issued on November 9th, with Gilbert Currell providing security. On this bond William was listed as a widower. Sarah and William had at least two sons, Michael W. and Jesse.

William George was a common name in Lancaster County, but from 1800 to 1803 Sarah's husband William was identifiable on the Lancaster County personal property taxes. The family was listed each year as owning one male slave over 16 and two or more horses. In the later years additional white males over 16 were marked as living with them - these might have been sons from William's previous marriage.

William died with out a will before February 20th, 1804. On that date Sally (Sarah) George appeared in Lancaster County Court and applied for letters of administration for the estate of "William George son of Martin, deceased." At the same time it was ordered that an appraisal of William's personal estate be made and returned to the court. It does not appear that the appraisal was ever recorded and that William's name did not appear again in the county records until Michael and Jesse were trying to obtain Revolutionary War pension benefits.

An 1834 deposition about the service of a William George in the war was made by Luke Ashburn who testified that William enlisted under Capt. Saunders on the deck of the schooner Lewis Sally for two years and served in the company under Capt. Benjamin. An 1845 deposition by Thomas Currell stated that a William George was in a company under Captain J. Benjamin serving five years. The name William George is included on the Lancaster County Revolutionary War Honor Roll.

In 1804 Sally (Sarah) George appeared on the Lancaster County personal property taxes. She was listed with one male slave over 16, one horse and no white males over the age of 16. She was not listed in 1805 and appears to have remarried quickly. When the order was made to appraise William's estate one of the appraisers listed was William Meredith. On May 22nd, 1805 a marriage bond was issued in Lancaster County for Daniel H. Harmon and Sarah George with William Meredith providing security. Another possible marriage was recorded in 1806 to Augustin Hughlett, but the Harmon marriage seems more likely.

No further records are known for Sarah.
