Michael W. George was born about 1798 in Lancaster county. He was the son of William George and Sarah Wilder. The W. in his name may have stood for Wilder. An 1846 Lancaster County Order Book entry stated that Michael and Jesse George were the sons of William George, a Revolutionary War veteran who died about 1800.

Michael was married four times and had children from his second and third marriages. He married Judith Shelton on January 15th, 1823. Michael remarried to Elizabeth, the widow of William Jefferson on December 26th, 1827. They were married by Jeremiah B. Jeter. They had three sons; Zamoth, William and Michael. When Elizabeth received her dower from the estate of her late husband it was noted the Michael W. George was renting the home of William Jefferson and that he should continue paying 2/3 rent to the orphans of William Jefferson.

The 1830 census shows Michael W. George as the head of a family in Lancaster county. Household members are; two males under 5, one male 30-39, one female 5-9, one female 15-19 and one female 30-39.

Elizabeth died and Michael remarried for the third time. On August 17th, 1836 he married Judith D. George, they were wed by J. Spriggs. They had two daughters; Elizabeth and Lucretia.

The 1840 census in Lancaster lists the Michael George family as; two males under 5, two males 5-9, three males 10-14, one male 40-49, one female under 5, one female 20-29 and one female 50-59. Seven slaves were also listed; one male under 10, two males 10-23, one male 24-35, one male 36-54, one female 10-23 and one female 24-35.

Judith died sometime before 1842 and Michael married the widow Anne S. Gaines on February 10th of that year. They were married by Addison Hall.

The 1850 census lists Michael W. George as age 50, his occupation was given as "plasterer." Other people living in his household were; Nancy S. George, 48, William T. George, 20, Michael W. George, Jr., 17, Lucretia George, 10, Richard Gaines, 23 and Joseph Gaines, 17. All four young men are listed as working as oyster men. Richard and Joseph were sons of Anne (or "Nancy") by her previous marriage. Michael had no real estate listed on the census form, but his name did appear on the 1850 slave schedule. In 1850 he paid personal property taxes on one slave under 16, one slave under 12, one "other watch" (not gold or silver), and one "other clock" (not metallic).

In October of 1850 Michael purchased 1 1/2 acres of land from Nancy Wilder for $18.75. The lot was described as "on which the said George has built a house, lying and being situate on Carters Creek, and being bounded on the south by James W. Gresham's land, and on the northwest by Carter's Creek, on the east by the road leading to the steam boat wharf." At the time Michael's son, Zamoth, was living with Nancy and she had just previously purchased land in the same area from Zamoth and from a Sarah A. George. In 1854 Nancy Wilder again sold land to Michael, this time 1/2 an acre of land adjoining land he already owned for $15.

Michael wrote his will on March 17th, 1857. The will listed the names of all five of his children. He instructed that his three sons receive nothing more than two shillings apiece. Michael's daughters received all of his estate to be divided equally among the two of them. His fourth wife's name was not mentioned. He died in June of 1858. According to the death register he died of "affect brain", age 60, son of William and Sallie George. His death was reported by his brother Jesse. Michael's will was brought to court on August 16th, 1858 to be probated but was not executed until September 20th when an additional witness came to testify.

His personal estate was appraised and sold on October 27th. Items in his inventory included a musket, powder horn, two oyster plates, four pairs of oyster tongs, an oyster knife and a coffee pot. A canoe valued at $15 was also listed. Livestock included a cow, a calf and three hogs. The whole estate was valued at $168. At the auction his widow purchased some of the cookware and Zamoth bought the musket, oyster knife, a set of salt stands and a pair of shoe brushes.
