Susan married on February 24th, 1841 in Richmond County to Samuel R. Franklin. Consent given by William H. Sisson, witnessed by John T. Sisson and Elbourton H. Sisson. James Johnson, bondsman.
The couple appears in the 1850 census with four children already. Susan's age is given as 27. They are in the Lunenburg Parish area of Richmond County. Samuel is a farmer with real estate valued at $100. In 1854 Susan and Samuel's three-year-old daughter Sarah died. She was buried at Nomini Grove alongside Samuel's parents, a hand carved stone marker was made with her initials and year of death.
The 1860 census shows Susan and Samuel still in Richmond County served by the Stony Hill post office. Her age is 38, seven children are listed. Samule has real estate valued at $300 and personal property of $500. No occupation is listed for him. In addition the family a twenty year old free black man named Henry Gaskins lives in the home.
Susan's two oldest sons served in the Confederate Army during the war. Lucius was killed in action at the Battle of Chancellorsville.
According to the 1870 Mortality Schedule Susan died in June of 1869 of typhoid fever at age 46. Virginia, Deaths and Burials Index, 1853-1917 gives her date of death as June 10th. Susan was buried at the Franklin Family Cemetery beside her daughter Sarah. Like Sarah a hand carved stone with her initials was placed and a more modern concrete stone added later. The dates on the concrete stone are in error.
