Absalom Lewis was born in 1740 in Accomack County. He was the illegitimate child of Louisa Lewis, daughter of William Lewis. Louisa was about 18 at the time of his birth and unmarried. Absalom was bound to John Banfield on August 30th, 1743 at the age of three to be cared for and taught the trade of "weaver & slay maker". On January 29th, 1751 bound out again as the 11 year old son of Louisa Lewis to Hope Ewell "till lawful age to learn the trade of house carpenter." A third record of indenture/apprenticeship for Absalom was signed on July 30th, 1754. "Absalem Lewis Aged Fourteen years or thereabouts be bound by Church Wardens of Accomack Parish to George Hope till Lawfull age to learn the Trade of a House Carpenter he the said Hope first giving Security for Performance of Conditions in said Indenture."

Absalom married soon after his indenture ended to Esther. No details about Esther as yet known. Between 1763 and 1785 they had four sons and one daughter, who was named after Absalom's mother.

On January 21st, 1779 Absalom bought 100 acres of land at Shores Island in Accomack County from John and Patience Chandler for 200 pounds money of Virginia. The land was described as being: "North East side of the mouth of Hunting Creek, bounded on the line of George Hope Ewell and so turning a long the said George Hope Ewell's unto Little Back Creek and down the said creek to the Back Side and from thence along the Bayside to the line of George Hope Ewell together with all hammocks and marshes and timber."

A 1780 reconstructed tax record lists Absalom as the head of a family with one tithable over 21 living with him and owning 13 cattle. A 1790 reconstructed record lists two tithable over 16 and one horse. Absalom is also listed in Accomack on the 1800 census. Esther died at some point before 1805 because on November 28th of that year Absalom married Rachel Bloxom the recent widow of Absalom Ross. Absalom Lewis was granted adminstration of the estate of Absalom Ross on December 31st, 1805.

Absalom wrote a will on August 27th, 1808 and signed with a mark. His will was proven on May 30th, 1814.
