Anthony Sydnor
Anthony Sydnor >> Epaphroditus Sydnor >> John Sydnor >> Epaphroditus Sydnor >> John Sydnor >> Nancy Sydnor >> Fairfax Lewis >> Orah Lewis >> Marvin George >> Maida GeorgeAnthony first married a Glascock, probably Winifred daughter of Thomas Glascock and Anne. By this marriage he had a son named Anthony who was named in Thomas Glascock's 1713 will. Anthony's first wife died soon after the birth of their son and he remarried in May of 1710 to Elizabeth Dew, daughter of Thomas Dew and Elizabeth Barber. Anthony and Elizabeth had at least 10 children including another son named Anthony (indicating that his first son died before 1724 when the second Anthony was born). The names and dates for most of the children of Anthony Sydnor were discovered in 1927 by F.W. Sydnor in an old Bible dated 1725 that was owned by Sydnor Belfield of "Chesnut Hill" near Warsaw in Richmond County.
Anthony and his family lived in the area of Richmond County around Totuskey Creek. Anthony was named surveyor of highways in Richmond County in 1722. In 1729 Anthony received a land grant for 35 acres in Richmond County. Anthony acquired many properties in Richmond County and from his will seemed to keep slaves and livestock at many of them.
Anthony wrote his will on September 27th, 1759. He left first his dwelling plantation to his grandson John Sydnor son of Epaphroditus Sydnor, deceased. He described the bounds of this plantation as surrounded by a cornfield John Sydnor already owned, Mill Swamp, Dun's Spring Branch and Drinking Swamp. Anthony left additional lands to grandsons Anthony, Giles, Robert and Epaphroditus. To his wife Elizabeth, Anthony left eight slaves and the use of his dwelling plantation for the rest of her life before it would go to their grandson John. In the remainder of his lengthy will Anthony left some land to his daughter Dewannah and divided his large holdings of slaves and livestock among many of his grandchildren. The will of Anthony Sydnor was proven on November 5th, 1759 in Richmond County Court.
An inventory of Anthony's estate included the names of 36 slaves. Items from inside his home included two guns, a sword, hand irons, a clock, a looking glass, nine silver dinner spoons, six silver tea spoons, 147 gallons of Brandy and 40 gallons of "syder." His livestock included seven horses, two colts, 128 hogs, 123 cattle and 30 sheep.
