Carmel United Methodist Church

Carmel United Methodist Church was formed in 1851 near Kinsale in Westmoreland County as Carmel Methodist Episcopal Church. The Methodist Episcopal Church was established in Baltimore, Maryland in 1784 by Francis Asbury. The following year he visited the Northern Neck of Virginia. As a result of that visit he formed the Lancaster Circuit (which served all the Northern Neck Counties). In the first year the circuit was served by two Reverends, Joseph Everett and Lewin Ross, and included 27 preaching-places - mostly in barns or outside. Many of those places would go on to become the Methodist Churches of the Northern Neck and Carmel was likely one. According the Elizabeth Dos Passos' 1973 article in the Northern Neck of Virginia Historical Magazine, John Hardwick father of Samuel Redman Hardwick lived near the church and donated four acres of land to be used for the cemetery, but this statement seems to conflict with later facts, including that John Hardwick may have died about 1841.

In 1939 three of the main branches in the Methodist Church joined together and Carmel became known as Carmel Methodist Church. After another round of unification in the Methodist Church in 1968 it changed again to Carmel United Methodist Church.
