He immigrated to Lancaster, Virginia and served at St. Mary's Whitechapel and Christ Church.
John immigrated to the Virginia Colony in 1711. He served as rector at St. Mary's Whitechapel and Christ Church from 1712 to his death in 1743. He oversaw the construction of both of the historic buildings that stand today.
John married Elizabeth Jones about 1723. They had at least nine children. Though he preached in Lancaster County, John also acquired lands in Prince William and King George counties.
John wrote his will on February 18th, 1742. He left to his wife Elizabeth, her dower of 2,740 acres of land in Prince William and a plantation in Corotoman Neck, Lancaster, those lands to be divided between their sons, William, Thomas, and James at her death. Thomas also received another 350 acres of land in Prince William and lands bequeathed to John by his brother Alexander Bell.
