Mary Jane Claughton

Mary Jane married Samuel Cralle, son of John Cralle and Garner Spelman, on September 19th, 1786. They had at least three sons and two daughters.

Samuel had severed under Mary Jane's uncle, Thomas Claughton, in the Northumberland County Militia during the Revolution. He continued his military service and was listed as a Captain of the 37th Militia on August 13th, 1794. He was promoted to the rank of Major at some point.

In 1802 Mary and Samuel along with two of her other siblings brought a chancery case against her brother William Claughton as the adminstrator of the estatate of George Harrison. William was subpoenaed to appear in court in 1806. No details were recorded and the case stayed open until December 1819 when it was dismissed by the plaintiffs. George Harrison could have been a possible relation of the Claughton children's mother.

The 1810 census in Northumberland lists Samuel Cralle. Household members were; one male 10-15, two males 16-26, one male over 45, two females 10-15, one female over 45 and nine slaves.

The 1820 census again listed Samuel Cralle as the head of a household. Family members listed were; one male under 10, one male 16-25, one male 26-44, one male over 45, one female 10-15, three females 16-25 and one female over 45. Slaves listed were; one male under 14, two males 26-44, four females under 14, two females 26-44 and one female over 45.

Mary Jane died about 1827.
