Richard Flynt
Richard Flynt >> Thomas Flynt >> Jane Flynt >> Thomas Myers >> Beheathland Myers >> Mary Claughton >> Darius Cralle >> Eliza Jane Cralle >> Laura Sisson >> Louise Bryant >> Ralph Dameron >> Mark DameronRichard Flynt was a Scottish immigrant who received many land patents and served as Clerk of Northumberland County.
Richard and his brother Thomas both immigrated to Virginia at a young age. Richard received a land grant jointly with John Ingram for 406 acres in Northumberland County on April 15th, 1651. The property bordered Dividing Creek on the south and west. In November 1652 Richard received 200 acres along with William Ratton on the Corotoman River in Lancaster County. In September of 1653 Richard sold his share of his first patent to John Ingram. That same month Richard also purchased one half of a 150 acre patent from Thomas Shepard in Northumberland County.
In January 1652 a deposition was recorded in Northumberland County court claiming that Richard Flynt was running a "Baudy House" and that his mother had run a "Baudy House" in England:
Richard Flynt his depo.
Thomas Hopkins his depo.
Thomas Hopkins aged 34 years or there abouts sworn
and examined saith that being in discourse with Richard
Flynt he the said Flynt told this depondent that Cyprain
Bishop came into the house of the said Flynt and asked him
if he kept a Baudy House who replyed no, why do you ask
such a question, the said Bishop answered that Bowyers
wife reported his wife lay in a young mans arms in the
house of the said Flynt and that he the said Bishop would
have Bowyers wife whipped. The said Flynt replyed that
that would not have her whipt. The said Bishop answered
again that if that would [-----] her whipped he knew what
would the said Flynt [-----] what that was. Bishop replied
that Bowyers wife said the said Flynts wifes mother kept a
Baudy House in England and further the said Flynt told this
depondent that he took it not as neighborly curtesy from the
said Bishop because he told the said Flynt of it and the said
Bishop and his wife had a falling out with [-----] Bowyers
wife and further saith not.

In October 1655 Dorothy Flint received several cows from William Warder "for the sole use of the said Dorothia and her children." Some genealogies interpret this record to mean Dorothy was receiving a family inheritance and that her maiden name may have been Warder.
In 1657 and 1658 Richard received two more land patents for 150 acres on the northwest side of the "Yoecomocoe" River and 394 acres northeast upon the "Patomeck" River and south by west upon little "Wiccocomocoe" creek.
In 1657 Richard witnessed the will of John Armsley of Westmoreland County. In 1661 Richard administered the estate of Henry Hayler. Richard became the third person to serve as Clerk of Northumberland County on November 22nd, 1659 and kept the counties records in order until his death.
On June 28th, 1664 Richard received a large 480 acre land patent. 150 acres abutting northernly and westerly on the Mattapony River (an early name for a branch of the Yeocomico River) and 330 acres on the same river adjoining land patented by John Chambers in 1652. Later that same summer Richard wrote his will. He left the 480 acres and a gold ring to his oldest son Richard and stated that it was the tract of land where he was currently living. His daughter Mary was left three cows, an iron pot, three pewter dishes, a feather bed with linens, her mother's clothing (indicating that Dorothy had already died) and a gold mourning ring. His son Peter received one cow. He instructed that the rest of his personal estate to be equally divided between his three sons when they came of age but until that time the estate should be managed by a "honest carefull person" for the use, benefit and education of his three sons. Richard's will was proven in court on October 21st, 1664.
