Susannah Merriman was born in Lancaster County about 1666, the only child of Richard Merriman and Susannah Champion. Her mother died at a young age and her father did not remarry. Susannah married to William Payne about 1684 and they had at least six children. In 1696 Richard Merriman wrote his will and left all of his estate to William Payne and William and Susannah's two oldest sons. Her father died later that same year and William served as his executor.

William wrote his own will on September 24th, 1696 in St. Marys Whitechapel Parish, Lancaster County. He noted that his two sons William and Richard were provided for in the will of their grandfather. He gave to his son John all of his land in the "freshes" of the Rappahannock River, and to his son George all of the land in the forest of Lancaster. He named two daughters and noted that should his sons die before coming of age that their land should go to their sisters. He did not name Susannah in his will but only referred to her as his beloved wife and requested that if she remarry then "in that case it is my will that all my sons shall be free to manage over their own persons and affairs and to act and do for themselves at the age of sixteen." William's will was probated on November 12th, 1700.

Susannah did remarry soon after William's death to Hugh Ladner. Ladner had one daughter from a previous marriage. In his will proven in 1709 he named Susannah, as well as several of her children by her former husband. William Payne II served as one of the executor's of his step-father's estate.

Little more is known about Susannah. She was living on August 26th, 1726 when her son William Payne II wrote his will. He referred to her as his mother Susannah Ladner and requested that one slave be purchased from the proceeds of his estate and delivered to her as soon as possible.
