William G. Alexander

I have not been able to locate the family in the 1850 census. On May 2nd, 1854 William Alexander, 10-year-old son of William and Mary Alexander died of pleurisy - the death was reported by his father.

The exact date of William's death is unknown. He died without a will possibly in late 1858 or very early 1859. At a meeting of the monthly Northumberland County Court on February 14th, 1859 Henry J. Marsh was granted administration of his estate and William H. Haynie, John B. Edwards, and S.S. Tignor were named as appraisers. The appraisal took place on February 23rd and a value of $625.50 reported. A number of farming implements were recorded including a cultivator, several plows, an iron tooth harrow and yokes for oxen. Fishing supplies including oyster tongs, oyster rakes, a gill net and crab net were all listed. Two yokes of oxen were appraised, one at $35 and one at $25. A sorrel mare was also valued at $35. Other items in the inventory included a shotgun, a musket, a looking glass, two coffee pots, and three bedroom furniture sets. The most valuable item recorded was 48 bushels of corn listed at $168.

The estate auction was held on February 24th, 1859. William's widow, Mary, purchased items totaling $197.30, including the "rent of one part of the land for the present year," "Hire of the negro woman Siner for the present year," and the wheat crop.

In July of 1860 the estate was ordered to be audited and settled. In February 1861 the estate was returned to the court by Henry J. Marsh. In March of 1862 the account of the sale of William's estate was ordered to be recorded. After his debts were paid, the money from the auction was collected, and money owed to William was collected the estate was divided with $194 going to Mary and $65 to each of their six children.

Two of his children married children of Urbane Bush and Nancy Ann Haynie. Robert J. Alexander married Fannie E. Bush and both parties parents were given in Virginia, Select Marriages, 1785-1940. Eudora V. Alexander married Robert E. Bush and again both parties parents were listed in Virginia, Select Marriages, 1785-1940.
