Show Family Line Rebbecca Marmaduke >> Sarah Hardwick >> Bessie Allen >> Thelma Barnes >> Frances Franklin >> Mark Dameron
Rebbecca Marmaduke was born about 1825. According to William and Mary Quarterly, Vol. III her parents were James Bragg Marmaduke and Catherine Purcell. Her father remarried in 1827 and it is unclear if Rebecca's mother died or divorced her father. James obtained land in Missouri in 1835 and 1837 and was living in Missouri by the time of the 1840 census. Many unverified family trees give Catherine Purcell's date of death as 1851. Rebbecca remained in the Northern Neck, perhaps with her mother or other family when her father left the state. She married Samuel Redman Hardwick in 1843. Consent of her father James B. Marmaduke of Shelby County, Missouri was dated May 13th, 1843. Marriage bond was issued in Richmond County on June 15th, 1843.Virginia, Select Marriages, 1785-1940 shows the marriage date as June 13th, 1843 in Richmond County.

On the 1850 census Samuel R. Hardwick and Rebbecca are in Cople Parish, Westmoreland, VA. Samuel is a farmer with real estate valued at $3,500. Children listed are, Elizabeth 5 F, Mary 3 F, Lucy 2 F. Also living in the house is 25 year old William Dwelley. Samuel R. Hardwick is listed as a slave owner on the 1850 slave schedule. They probably lived beside Peckatone Plantation. A home known as "River View" is thought to have been built by Samuel Hardwick on land that eventually became part of the Peckatone Tract.

On the 1860 census Samuel sounds to be a successful farmer with real estate valued at $6,500 and a personal estate valued at $15,330. The family is only listed by initial on the census form. R. 35 F, E. 16 F, L. 12 F, S.F. 6 F, and W. 1 M. The nearest Post Office is given as Kinsale. The 1860 slave schedule showed Samuel Redman held 18 slaves. No slave names are listed, only age and sex. He had four slave houses.

Rebbecca died later in 1860 after the census. She may be buried in the plot at "River View," but no gravestones remain.
