John Barnes was born in Accomack County around the year 1750 to Arthur Barnes and Elizabeth Melson, he may have been an only child. When Arthur Barnes died he left his estate to his widow and to John the plantation where they lived. James Henry was named guardian of John. Arthur's brother William refused to act as executor of the estate and the Sheriff was ordered to sell Arthur's personal estate and make settlement of his debts. The land left to John was land on Hunting Creek purchased by his father in 1753.

John married Elizabeth Tabitha Jacob on December 26th, 1775 in Northampton County. They went on to have at least eight children.

Tax records from 1782 list one tithable person over 21 in the household, one horse, four cattle and two wagon wheels. Two slaves were also listed.

John wrote his will on September 10th, 1799. He left the land where he lived to his son Arthur and gave his personal estate to his wife Tabitha until she died or remarried and then ordered it to be divided equally among his children. It appears the land he lived on was the same property he inherited from his father. He signed the will by marking a X.

John's will was proven in Accomack County court on the 28th day of the following month.
