John Claughton
John Claughton >> Pemberton Claughton >> Pemberton Claughton >> Pemberton Claughton >> Mary Claughton >> Darius Cralle >> Eliza Jane Cralle >> Laura Sisson >> Louise Bryant >> Ralph Dameron >> Mark DameronIn November 1703 as part of a grand jury in Northumberland John ordered the sheriff to take Daniel Sivilivant into custody for "an unChristian like part in burying his serv maid or woman soe shallow that the Doggs or hoggs halled her out of the ground." More witnesses to the crime were also called to the next court meeting. In June 1711 John testified in court that Christopher Conway had spent 200lbs of tobacco in recovering his runaway servant, Patrick Grady. Grady was ordered to extend his servitude to cover the expense. In March of 1722 Judith Laycock petitioned the Northumberland Court for her freedom from John Claughton. Her freedom was granted and John was ordered to pay freedom dues.
At the marriage of their oldest son, Pemberton, John and Anne deeded him 249 acres of land in Mattapony Neck. This land was formerly owned by Anne's father and bordering the land of Lawrence Dameron. When Pemberton died in 1710 an inventory of his estate was taken on March 15th. John ordered the inventory re-recorded on June 20th, 1711. John also tried to gain guardianship of Pemberton's son in July of 1714 and appeared to be successful because in May of 1716 he was listed as guardian of Pemberton, Jr. when he filed a suit against Josiah Dameron who married the relict of Pemberton Claughton, deceased, father of the orphan.
John signed his will on March 6th, 1726 and it was proven in court the following July. He left land to his sons John and Richard. He also mentions grandsons, John and Pemberton. He does not appear to mention a wife.
