John Barnes >> Arthur Barnes >> John Barnes >> Arthur Barnes >> James Barnes >> Susan Barnes >> Eddie Barnes >> Thelma Barnes >> Frances Franklin >> Mark DameronIn January 1706 and January 1708 John Barnes, Jr. was listed as a witness to the wills of William Hudson and Isaac Dix. In April of 1714 John was named in his father's will as executor and residuary legatee. He inherited his father's land on Metompkin Island, which he sold in 1726 to William Burton. He also inherited the land his father purchased in 1680 on the inland side of Metompkin Bay, and later later divided that land among three of his own sons in his will.
On December 16th, 1737 John made his will. He identified himself as a planter. John left 70 acres to John III at the head of Hogshead Branch. To Arthur he left "a parcel of land beginning at a cedar post between the upper landing point and the little island and then taking the branch till it forms to two...and then by a parcel of line trees unto the head line of Andrew Finneys..." He gave additional lands to sons Robin and William, and housewares to daughters Esther and Frances. He also left his mill to William. Youngest son Ezekiel received a horse and bridle. John signed his will and spelled Barnes with an "E."
John's will was proven on May 2nd, 1738. An inventory of John's personal estate was presented to the Accomack Court on February 6th, 1738 by William Parker and George Bundick. Interesting items included 20 head of hogs, blacksmith tools with bellows, carpentry tools and shoe-making tools.
